Project Category: Forestry
This project
provided technical assistance to
develop a

strategic plan for fire
hazard
reduction for Carroll,
Grayson and Montgomery
Counties and the City of Galax. The plan identified
communities and subdivisions that were at risk from
wildfire; developed fire hazard reduction plans for
identified communities; and identified other
fire hazards. Once the communities were identified,
plans for wildfire protection were developed
including mitigation plans for identified hazards and
the
resources needed to implement the plan. The
following
goals were identified in the plans:
Develop public
outreach programs for wildfires; Educate at-risk homeowners about the
program; Work with developers to create firewise communities for new
developments; Review community development rules and encourage revisions
that lead to firewise developments; Conduct community firewise planning;
Implement hazard reduction identified in the plan; Promote fuel
reduction projects in high risk communities; Strengthen community
volunteer fire departments’ ability to fight wildfires. Preventing
wildfires around homes will ultimately result in better protection for
residents, save lives and protect property. This project was funded by
the VA Department of Forestry through an Economic Action Program from
the USDA Forest Service.
