Educator & Youth Mini-Grant Program

Category – Youth Involvement

Story Description - South Centre Corridors RC&D Council sponsored an Educator &  
Youth Mini-Grant Program in our project area.  The purpose of the grants were to provide financial assistance to area schools and Soil & Water Conservation District’s to educate youth on the environment and natural resources. 

 Total Project Value – The total project value was $23,490.  This represents $6,684 in grants and cash donations.  In-kind services and volunteer time was valued at $16,806.

 Return on Federal Investment - The Coordinator and NRCS staff spent a total of 56 hours on this project which totaled $2520.  The total project value was $23,490 this equals a ratio of 9 to 1 of local dollars to federal dollars. 

Outcomes:
   ▪10 projects were funded for students to participate in environmental and natural  resource projects and activities. 

   ▪14 schools participated in the program which included grades K-12 and alternative schools.

   ▪3,300 youth benefited from the program and increase their knowledge on the environment and natural resources. 

All grants projects funded assisted teachers with addressing state learning standards.   

Youth Involvement – Over 3,300 benefitted from the Educator & Youth Mini-Grant  Program. Students participated in field trips, a youth farm day, after school 4-H programs, water quality monitoring, tree plantings, outdoor gardening and river trail       construction projects.

 Partners – Major partners in this project were Wyattt Middle School, Southampton County Schools, Prince George High School, Patrick Copeland Elementary School, Sutherland Elementary School, Woodlawn Learning Center, Sussex County Schools, Blandford Academy, NRCS, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Chowan Basin Soil & Water District, Appomattox River Soil & Water District, and Virginia Department of Forestry.  Grant funds for the project were provided by Virginia Department of Conservation & Recreation.
